EP Review: Chasing Traits - Enigma

Chasing Traits - Enigma
Stoke of Genius:

Released: Independent, December 7, 2012

This debut EP from the young Chasing Traits is beautiful, elegant and of an incredibly high standard.

Enigma is well structured and clearly in the hands of four men who have a clear understanding of composition and style.

The release takes great influence from the likes of the ambient The xx as well as the gentle but rockier sounds of indie bands of the past fifteen years.

'Sparrow' is a confident opening track to draw you in with a soothing electric guitar build-up until the crashing down at the two-minute mark.

Luke Scrivens' effortless vocals are extremely effective throughout the EP, alongside the simple guitar riffs, bass guitar and drum beats from Brad Malbon, Ben Tansey and James Taylor respectively.

'Safe Haven' is no exception and uses some heavier influences to really grab the attention with an unexpected addictive riff to end the song.

Heavy penultimate track 'Lost Cause' opens with a cracking instrumental and continues with a strong use of the guitars, drums and haunting vocals.

The self-titled final song uses a glockenspiel to great effect with a comforting crescendo drum beat.

Although too reminiscent of Kings of Leon's backing vocals for 'Use Somebody', 'Enigma' still proves to be an extremely impressive end to a pleasant EP.

An impressive debut four-track well worth a listen to for any listener unafraid of stepping outside of the traditional indie zone.
