EP Review: The Rat Race - The Beatles Did It First

The Rat Race - It's My Time
Stoke of Genius:

Released: Independent, March 2, 2013

The debut EP from local indie outfit The Rat Race is a strong, solid and concise effort which is well worth a listen.

The Beatles Did It First opens with 'Fast and Slow', immediately drawing attention with a welcomingly fast and catchy repetitive drum beat and guitar riff.

Its variation of snare, and tempo, is enticing, while the echoed vocals work brilliantly.

The electric guitar solo contrasts greatly with the immediate change to a slowed down build-up for the climax.

Despite the song never providing a convictive climax, the quick alternations of tempo mimicking the lyrics provide enough satisfaction for a strong intro to the EP.

The title track enjoys a typical indie intro with Arctic Monkeys-esque lyrics and a Green Day-like use of instrumentation.

Although the song never really hits its peak, the carefree vocals and fast-paced riff complement one another effectively enough for a worthy listen.

A change in sound arrives with 'One More Day' featuring the vocals of Nuclear Safari's Emily Law.

The indie-pop chorus is pleasant but is reminiscent of the typical noughties music of pop trying to sound alternative.

Emily's vocals are appropriate for the cheesy chorus harmony but the ballad fails to reach the standard set by the up-tempo tracks.

'It's My Time' might have been the EP highlight if the vocals and playing were delivered more aggressively.

Nevertheless, the tight crispness and The Strokes-influenced catchy vocals and riff provide an enjoyable end to an exciting first release.

Having only formed last year, the band have impressively produced a well-structured four-track EP which shows much promise for the future.
