Conjunction 12 festival artist Andrew Holmes has created the sculpture
‘Lych Gate’ using materials reclaimed from the demolition sites and
wastegrounds of Stoke-on-Trent over the past 30 years.
The event invites anyone to sing a song, dance, tell a joke, read a
poem, give a talk, tell a story or play a tune.
Senior lecturer Penny Vincent said: “I always look forward to
ParkLive! as it’s always a surprise who performs.
“ParkLive! is going back to its roots – an open spot for anyone to
perform if they want to.
“It is not certain who will turn up! We have no funding so it depends
on whether local people feel like having a go…”
The main annual event took place in March with another day celebrating
the Jubilee weekend in the summer.
In collaboration with the Stoke-on-Trent City Council, the Friends of
Hanley Park and Staffordshire University’s Creative Communities Unit have
organised the event.
Andrew was invited by leading Stoke-on-Trent gallery Airspace to
contribute to the Conjunction festival.
Penny added: “Having Andrew build his installation in the wildlife
area is a real benefit and will attract different audiences.
“Airspace artists are very concerned to see the park develop, and work
closely with the council and the Friends to support this.”
The Reclaim the Night project is for women walking outside in the dark
and makes a statement about community safety.
The Streets are Ours night walk is available to everyone who wants to
explore the neighbourhood safely in the dark.
“The UniQ is a great place to do a walk like this and to open it up to
anyone who feels unsafe on their own in the dark and wants to explore the area
at night.
“The Creative Communities Unit and Airspace came up with the idea after
talking about survival and a sense of community.”
People will give short talks and performances along the walk to inform
about the range of projects and activities in the area.
ParkLive! will take place between 12.30 and 2.30pm with a family
nature trail at 1pm. The Streets are Ours night walk is between 6 and 7.30pm.
